I never understood why singing made me feel exceptionally uplifted; it wasn’t until my studies on the nervous system revealed that it actually activates the brain to produce feel-good hormones!

Endorphins are mood boosters and pain relievers and Oxytocin, another hormone released during singing, promotes feelings of connection, trust and well-being, especially when you sing in the company of others.

This ultimately fulfils the third in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, addressing love and belonging.

Where diaphragmatic breathing is involved when singing, the parasympathetic nervous system is also activated, This slows down the heart rate and promotes relaxation. Singing also provides an outlet for emotional expression, which can be cathartic to help relieve pent up emotions.

The act of engaging in the beauty of the singing art form also rejuvenates one’s creativity, paving the way for one’s inspiration and joy to follow.
